In his presentation Dr. Velte looks at the results of the European Commission’s Energy Sector Inquiry into the European electricity and gas sectors and the German gas market in specific which has revealed several anticompetitive effects and shortcomings in these markets. For Germany he highlights the potential positive effects as well as potential threats to the market which could be a result of changes in regulation and legislation in e.g. the Energiewirtschaftsgesetz (EnWG), the Gesetz gegen Wettbewerbsbeschränkungen (GWB) or activities against long-term delivery contracts by the Federal Cartel Office. Dr. Teis provides a comprehensive overview of the developments that lead to the opening of the European Energy Exchange (EEX). He describes the objectives of the EEX such as transparency and increased liquidity as well as the products that are tradable. The comparison of the EEX with other European energy exchanges shows that prices are on a European level. LNG in NW EuropeLNG in NW Europe Presentation by Ulco Vermeulen, Managing Director Gate, held at the tenth TEAM CONSULT Colloquium on September 20th in Berlin. After a short introduction of the GATE Terminal and the production forecasts of the Netherlands Ulco Vermeulen describes the development and growing importance of the LNG market. He specifically refers to the situation in North-West Europe with respect to issues of security of supply, the growth potential of regasification terminals as well as the future demand for flexibility. X in Berlin on the 20th of September 2007. Daniel Simmons gives an overview on the future world energy demand as well as the development of the demand and import structure (Pipeline and LNG) of natural gas in Europe in specific. Furthermore he points out that Europe has entered the competition for global supplies and consequently has to develop an attractive gas market. This will be reached through the further development of hubs, the infrastructure required and changes in regulation . This development should eventually lead to the establishment of a single hub in Europe.
